Jobseekers receive information at counters at the Federal Office of Employment in Nuremberg.
MUNICH, The number of unemployed people in Germany surpassed three million in January, with the jobless rate reaching 7.4 percent, according to a report published Thursday by the Federal Employment Agency.
A
total of 3.318 million people were registered as unemployed, 54,000
more than the same time last year.
Frank-Juergen
Weise, chief of the agency, told local media he believed average
unemployment throughout 2013 would remain below three million.
Some
experts said the winter may have forced some construction sites to
stop work leading to more unemployment. Open-air services such as
beer gardens were also suspended, creating fewer job opportunities.
